The weather is starting to get cold, which means I'm hesitant to use my Contax G1. This camera is infamous for being fragile, which makes me skeptical of bringing it into the Canadian winters.
Luckily, I do own a fully mechanical camera: an original M42 screw mount Pentax Spotmatic that used to be my dad's.
I've rarely used this camera because of its lack of technology (even the light meter is broken), but now that the weather is changing, it seemed like a good time to try out something new.
When I bought my Contax G1, the seller threw in a roll of black and white Kodak film that expired in whoknowswhen. Since the light meter in my Spotmatic was broken anyway, I decided to do an experiment. I took my Spotmatic with a 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar and set the shutter speed to 1/60, the aperture wide open, loaded it with the mystery film and then took the camera out at night (though...this was really like 5pm, damn early winter nights).
I had never done night photography before, and my settings were based on educated guesses, but I'm really happy with the results.
